01 / Make the trip fit

Fewer bases.
More of China.

A destination list is easy. A route that works with your time, interests and energy takes more thought. Start with a sample below.

These are planning starting points, not live schedules or bookable itineraries. International travel days are additional. Actual flights, trains, mobility needs and entry conditions may change the best sequence.

02 / Choose with purpose

Which China is calling you?

Use the destinations together with the route builder. The night ranges below are editorial allowances, not minimum stay requirements.

A quiet Chinese-inspired interior

The best details are often the quiet ones.

03 / Before you arrive

Small details.
Real consequences.

Open the essentials before making firm bookings.

Passport + entry

Confirm the requirements for your own passport and exact routing before nonrefundable bookings. Ordinary U.S. passport holders should not assume a blanket tourist visa exemption. The online application process includes review and passport submission; an online status is not the visa itself.

Transit is a routing rule

The 240-hour transit exemption is conditional. Eligibility depends on nationality, approved ports, permitted areas and confirmed onward travel to a different country or region. A simple U.S.–China–U.S. return does not satisfy that third-country routing condition. Ask for an itinerary-specific check; never build a trip around a guess.

Payments that have a backup

Set up supported mobile payments, check passport verification and test your linked card before departure. Carry a second payment card and some RMB cash. Acceptance varies; do not rely on one app, one phone or one card.

Connectivity + account access

Check lawful connectivity options with your provider. Some familiar services are restricted, and U.S. guidance warns that VPN use is illegal in most cases. Save hotel names and addresses in Chinese, tickets and essential contacts offline. Keep a workable plan for bank verification texts.

Rail booking + moving days

12306 uses real-name tickets: names and passport details must match, and you should carry the original document used to book. The published advance-sales window is 15 days including today; an agency request before that window is not an issued ticket. Verify the current rule and exact station.

Reservations + breathing room

Check timed-entry requirements and weekly closing days before assigning sightseeing dates. The Palace Museum generally closes Mondays except statutory holidays. Avoid a major prepaid visit immediately after an international arrival or a tight intercity connection.

Entry and travel conditions can change. Check the official references below for your travel date and passport. Reviewed October 19, 2026.

04 / The experience matters

Choose the stay.
Then choose the room.

A prestigious name does not tell you whether the neighborhood, layout or view fits your trip. These examples show what to ask.

A hotel to consider

The Peninsula Beijing

An all-suite option in Wangfujing. Compare suite layout, bedding and your preferred neighborhood before choosing.

A hotel to consider

The PuXuan, Beijing

A design-led option. Forbidden City views are tied to specific categories, including Grand Deluxe rooms; do not assume every room has that view.

A hotel to consider

Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li

A villa-based stay in restored shikumen buildings. Confirm the exact villa layout, stairs and access if mobility or young children affect your choice.

Ask before you book

The room-level questions

Is the view guaranteed in this category? How are beds arranged? Are there stairs inside the accommodation? Can a car reach the entrance? What is actually included in the rate?

Leave room for the experience

A dinner deserves more than a spare hour.

Keep a food-focused evening off your busiest transfer day. Check dietary needs before a tasting menu, and plan how you will get back to your hotel.

For sightseeing, pair an ambitious morning with a flexible afternoon. Keep the Great Wall separate from a full museum day, and give Zhangjiajie weather room to move.
